The human body has an amazing system to get rid of waste, especially waste that contains nitrogen. This system is called the excretory system, and its star players are the kidneys. We have two kidneys, each packed with over a million tiny filtering units called nephrons. These nephrons are like little factories that clean our blood. They filter out waste, reabsorb useful stuff, and make urine. The urine then travels through tubes called ureters to the bladder, where it’s stored until we’re ready to release it. When we urinate, the urine leaves our body through another tube called the urethra. But our kidneys don’t work alone. They get help from other body parts too. Our skin gets rid of some waste through sweat, our lungs remove waste when we breathe out, and our liver processes certain toxins. All together, these organs keep our body clean and balanced, making sure we stay healthy.
