Summary of 12th English My Mother At Sixty-Six Kamala Das

The poem “My Mother at Sixty-six” by Kamala Das is a touching portrayal of the poet’s emotions as she observes her aging mother during a car journey from her parents’ home to the airport. The poem captures the poet’s pain and ache as she realizes that her mother is growing old and frail, with her “face ashen like that of a corpse.” However, the poet quickly tries to push this thought away and instead focuses on the vibrant surroundings, such as the “young trees sprinting” and the “merry children spilling out of their homes.”

At the airport, when the poet looks at her mother again, she is struck by her mother’s “wan, pale / as a late winter’s moon” appearance, which evokes the “old familiar ache” and “childhood’s fear” within the poet. Yet, the poet’s outward reaction is one of a smile, as she simply says “see you soon, Amma” and continues to smile. The poem suggests the poet’s attempt to conceal her deep-seated emotions and put on a brave front for her aging mother.
