Chapter Summary for 12th English Memories of Childhood

This chapter is divided into two autobiographical accounts, each describing the experiences of marginalized women in different cultural contexts.

1. The Cutting of My Long Hair (by Zitkala-Sa)
Zitkala-Sa, a Native American woman, recalls her painful childhood experience when she was forcibly assimilated into Western culture at a boarding school. On her first day, she is overwhelmed by the unfamiliar environment, harsh treatment, and rigid rules. The most traumatic event occurs when her long hair, which holds cultural and spiritual significance for her people, is forcibly cut. In her culture, only cowards and mourners have short hair, and this act makes her feel powerless and humiliated, stripping away her identity.

2. We Too are Human Beings (by Bama)
Bama, a Tamil Dalit woman, shares her experiences of caste discrimination in India. As a child, she witnessed the everyday injustices inflicted upon her community by the upper castes. One incident that left a lasting impact on her involved an elder from her community who had to carry food to an upper-caste landlord without touching the packet, as it was believed that his touch would pollute the food. This experience made Bama acutely aware of the deep-rooted caste discrimination and ignited a sense of rebellion in her. She resolved to study hard and overcome these social barriers, hoping that education would enable her to challenge and change the oppressive system.
