Summary of Indigo Louis Fischer

The story recounts Gandhi’s entry into the Indian independence movement through his involvement in the Champaran peasant struggle in 1917. Rajkumar Shukla, an illiterate but resolute sharecropper, persuades Gandhi to investigate the exploitation of the Champaran peasants by British landlords who forced them to grow indigo.

Gandhi travels to Champaran, defying the order of the British official commissioner to leave. He is summoned to court, but refuses to post bail, challenging the authorities. Prominent local lawyers join Gandhi, willing to court arrest alongside him. Facing this civil disobedience, the government backs down and drops the case.
Gandhi then leads an extensive inquiry into the grievances of the peasants.

The official commission set up finds evidence of exploitation, forcing the British landlords to agree to refund a portion of the money they had extracted. This victory empowers the peasants and marks a turning point in Gandhi’s political evolution, demonstrating his ability to mobilize the masses through non-violent methods.

Gandhi also initiates social reforms in the Champaran villages, setting up schools and addressing issues of public health and sanitation. He emphasizes self-reliance, refusing help from an English pacifist who wanted to support the peasants’ cause, to teach the lawyers a lesson in independence.
