Summary Breathing and Exchange of Gases MCQ Test

How We Breathe:

  1. We breathe in air (inhale) and breathe out used air (exhale) using our lungs and airways.
  2. Special muscles (between our ribs and the diaphragm) help us breathe by changing the pressure in our chest.

What Happens When We Breathe:

  1. Oxygen from the air moves into our blood in tiny air sacs in our lungs called alveoli.
  2. At the same time, carbon dioxide from our blood moves into these air sacs to be breathed out.
  3. Our blood carries oxygen to all parts of our body and picks up carbon dioxide to bring back to the lungs.

How Gases Move:

  • Oxygen and carbon dioxide move by diffusion, which means they naturally spread from areas of high concentration to low concentration.

How Blood Carries Gases:

  • Oxygen is mostly carried by a protein in our blood called hemoglobin.
  • Carbon dioxide is mostly carried as bicarbonate in our blood.

Breathing Control:

  • Our brain controls our breathing rate based on how much oxygen and carbon dioxide is in our blood.
