Blood and Its Components:

  • Blood is a liquid that moves around our body in blood vessels.
  • It contains:
    1. Plasma (the liquid part)
    2. Red blood cells (carry oxygen)
    3. White blood cells (fight infections)
    4. Platelets (help blood clot)

Blood Types:

The Heart and Circulation:

  • The heart is a pump with four chambers (two upper, two lower).
  • It beats about 72 times per minute in a healthy person.
  • Each beat pushes about 70 mL of blood out to the body.
  • We have two main circulation paths:
    1. To and from the lungs (for oxygen pickup)
    2. To and from the rest of the body (to deliver oxygen and nutrients)

Heart Function:

  • The heart beats on its own, but its rate can be changed by nerves and hormones.
  • Doctors can check heart function with a test called an ECG.
